With the rate at which smartphone adoption has been growing (as many as 700,000 new phone activations a day for Android and 6 million on Christmas Day alone), there is a strong incentive for companies to jump into the mobile Web app marketplace and target its users.
But the costs associated with mobile app development can pose a barrier to making the move. Depending on the complexity of the app you require, the costs can be staggering, with a price tag anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000 or more with a 6-8 weeks development window.
Luckily, several companies have come out with great alternative solutions to this problem. Companies like MyAppBuilder.com and AppMakr by Socialize produce free (or cheap) native Android and iPhone applications that are built by you.
Most of these solutions require just a little bit of HTML knowledge as well as some design skills and Internet savvy to develop an app that has a lot of the features found in other traditionally developed apps.
Nothing comes completely free, of course. Many of these companies make their money by ads placed in the mobile apps. In exchange for being allowed to place ads in your app, you can use their software to create and customize your app to fit the needs of your business. Others charge a small amount each month to build the app but require no upfront costs.
There are a few hidden fees as well for Apple iPhone apps — submission into the iOS App Store requires you to join the Apple Developer’s Network, which runs $99 a year. With the developer login, you have access to all of Apple’s developer forums, which are run by Apple certified developers and employees, who will provide help answering questions for building the apps, as well as help with any questions or bugs that can come up along the way.
The Android Marketplace is free to publish in and the Android Developers Network is just as extensive as Apple’s, with as many people available to answer any kind of technical question you can come up with.
Each app store has its benefits and fallbacks, so it may be worth looking into what kind of functions you would like out of your app and what your customers are using.
For a tight budget, paying a smaller amount upfront to test the smartphone waters can be a smart move, especially for smaller companies and dealers in the marine industry. So without further ado, below are five tools for building “free” apps:
Appmakr –
Appmakr, a browser-based platform, allows you to build iPhone apps quickly directly from their webapp. With Appmakr, you can add live content streams that update directly inside of the app, pulling content directly from your blog and uploading it into the iPhone app for your readers.
Appmakr also offers the option for a paid, ad-free model, where you can choose to pay a fee of $79 per month per app and have ads removed from the iPhone app, as well as other advanced features.
Appbreeder -
AppBreeder provides a business with access to the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app stores with its “Build Once. Publish Everywhere.” motto. Users can build an app inside of the AppBreeder application that can be deployed across any marketplace or even available as a webapp on your company’s website.
Like a few of the other models below, AppBreeder charges a monthly fee ($29.99) to maintain and update your app.
AppGeyser -
AppGeyser provides Android apps built by you, using content generated from your company’s mobile website (if you have one). Because it is built using your website, it may not fit the needs of some companies, especially if they’re looking to add additional features and information in the Web app that isn’t found on the mobile website.
But for companies looking for a simple solution, it provides an alternative to the more complicated or feature-packed options.
Mobile Roadie -
Mobile Roadie offers a very robust suite of features, with the ability to share music, videos, photos, and calendars inside of the app. The app will also automatically connect with social networks such as Twitter and Facebook once the user logs in, allowing for easy communication between the application and social networks.
Mobile Roadie is a bit more expensive though, charging users a $499 set up fee as well as a $29 per month recurring charge. It also limits the app to 1,000 installs, charging up to $1,200 a year for unlimited downloads (otherwise it’s $0.01 per download each month to stay at the monthly price).
MyAppBuilder.com -
MyAppBuilder.com provides users with a way into both the Android and iPhone platforms for $29.99 a month and nothing up front for your first two apps. For this, MyAppBuilder.com will compile the data you send them, put it in the format that you want, and then submit it to each app store for approval.
If users want to create more than the two free apps that MyAppBuilder.com allows, it’s a nominal $59 a month.
With any of these options, users are allowed to set the price of their app, or make it free, and some of the paid options even allow for companies to sell ads inside their apps or put in another company’s advertising to monetize the app further.

Marketing a small business using social media tools has surged in recent years, with many investing their time into perfecting their Facebook pages or LinkedIn profiles. Another noteworthy resource is Yelp.com , where individuals create an account, find information on a local business, and comment on their experience there. Many small restaurant owners claim that Yelp allows them to reflect on the business strategies already in place and helps generate ideas to expand them.  The comments, often a mixture of good and bad, yield more positive than negative results. Reading good reviews boosts morale, while the bad ones give businesses an incentive to improve their tactics.
The first step business owners must take to establish their presence on Yelp is by creating a business profile on biz.yelp.com. It’s a good idea to attach your business profile to another active Yelp profile because it gives visitors the impression that you are an avid participant on the website and that you will be there to see their reviews and keep track of them. Facebook’s newest feature, Timeline, has garnered much attention since it was rolled out last month. Many love the new profile makeover, which makes all your content searchable in a highly visual format, while others consider the soon-to-be-mandatory change a move in the wrong direction. But, most significantly, this next evolution of Facebook has sparked a new debate about what social media can do and what it should be.
Only time will tell if Timeline’s goals will succeed and truly redefine our social media relationships. One thing is for sure, however: All profiles will eventually be converted to Timeline, making it an inescapable feature for all Facebook users.

After waiting more than an hour at the New Jersey terminal in late January, Virginia Champoux Sokoloff, a 41-year-old Montreal-based gift-store owner, was forced to buy a new ticket for $731 (U.S.). When an agent charged her $25 for baggage, she burst into tears.

A tale of two RRSPs

Ms. Sokoloff’s annual trip to New York had turned into a nightmare. So, after unsuccessfully trying to complain by phone and e-mail, she turned to Facebook.
“I knew if I wrote the post with all the details, somebody was going to see it,” says Ms. Sokoloff, who posted her story on Air Canada’s and her own Facebook pages.
Within minutes of posting on the airline’s wall, she got a call from the company’s social-media representative. When Ms. Sokoloff mentioned that her Facebook post was being shared online, Air Canada refunded $731 for her ticket and offered 25 per cent off her next ticket.
(Air Canada declined to comment on Ms. Sokoloff’s experience.)
Ms. Sokoloff’s Facebook encounter is the new normal in 21st-century customer service. Didn’t receive dipping sauce with your order? Ignored by a salesperson? Whine on Facebook or Twitter, and you’re guaranteed an instant response from the company’s social-media rep.
“There’s no voice-mail jail if [consumers] reach out to a company in this way,” says Randall Craig, a social-media expert in Toronto and author of Social Media for Business. “If the company doesn’t respond, the comment is sitting there for everyone to see … and that’s a problem.”
Those who have thousands of followers have the most pull. “If they see you’ve got a large platform and that you’re very much an influencer, they want to make sure that the influence you spread is positive or at least neutral, not negative,” Mr. Craig says.
And customers love to vent on company pages. A recent survey, conducted in 2011 by NM Incite, an international social-media consulting firm, found that 51 per cent of social-media users post negative feedback.
That has made Canadian companies a little shy about social-media action. Although more of them have started introducing Facebook and Twitter pages, a recent survey by SAS Canada and Leger Marketing found that only 17 per cent of large and mid-sized companies consistently post on social-media sites or monitor them.
The ones who do make an effort are richly rewarded.
Alissa Sklar, 41, who works in social-media services at ROI Research on Investment in Montreal, posted a complaint on Fido’s Facebook page about her frustrating experience of trying to connect to the technical-support team for four hours to gain access to BlackBerry Messenger and apps. Within 20 minutes, a Fido representative sent her a private message to ask when it would be best to call her. After a few phone calls, a service agent remedied the situation.
“Instead of being angry, I’m once again a loyal, happy customer. I’ve made a point of articulating that satisfaction online on Fido’s Facebook page,” Ms. Sklar says.
Smart companies know how to step up their game.
When Jacqueline Kendall, a senior publicist at Global Television in her late 20s, tweeted Pizza Pizza about a rude delivery man who harassed her with phone calls after she complained to customer service about a late delivery, her intention was just to air her grievance. She was not expecting a dialogue. But a Pizza Pizza representative e-mailed her to apologize and offered her a $50 credit. “I was really impressed; it was a nice token on their part,” she says.
“We want every customer to come back to Pizza Pizza, so whatever it takes to make them happy, that’s what we like to do,” says Pat Finelli, chief marketing officer at the company. He says that about 55 per cent of the time, customers are offered something of monetary value, such as a credit for future orders, to make up for their bad experience.
While most companies that are active on Twitter and Facebook try to respond to all customer inquiries in a timely way, it’s inevitable that some messages slip through the cracks.
Rosa Pearson, a 34-year-old graphic designer in Vancouver, faced continuous problems with Kitchen Aid blenders from Sears Canada. Unable to get her issue resolved, Ms. Pearson (whose Twitter username is “flutterflutters”) took to tweeting: “@SearsCA I’m not impressed with total lack of customer ‘service?’ after third Kitchen Aid product fail.”
Although she received a response within an hour to ask for her contact information (which she sent), no one followed up. She had to tweet again five days later to complain, after which an executive called her directly that day.
“He was very friendly, gave me his direct number for future problems and seemed to genuinely want to help – unlike everyone else I dealt with who just said what they were told to say,” Ms. Pearson says. She says that after speaking to him, she was happy that Sears took Twitter seriously.
Lizzie Nawn, social-media and marketing specialist at Sears Canada, says one of the challenges is tracking everything, reporting it internally and making sure it’s followed through. “It’s such a new medium – it’s different from traditional methods. We’re tailoring our customer service to deal with that,” she says.
Until recently, she was the sole social-media contact person, but now there is also a team of customer-service representatives who can deal with technical problems directly.
“Social media is a small piece of the pie when it comes to our customer-service strategy, but it’s very important,” Ms. Nawn says. “The demand for social media is very high in our society, and you have to stay with the times.”

Hire a web design student at a good rate. What's your take on the subject?

I was looking for a web design student that needs work, in hopes of getting a really good rate since I have a start up project I want to get off the ground and not much capital to invest yet.
I came across this video for a company called oDesk which seems to use an online collaboration method, bringing together the client with the web designer in a virtual office space and complete transparency for all involved.
This seems to be a great way to meet a candidate for a project in web design.
oDesk says they have web designers in different levels of abilities to choose from at varying rates.

Get Backlinks – Here are the 11 methods and backlink tools I use

My blog has 7670 backlinks as stated in my blog post Blogging Guide Blog Is One Year Old and since then I’ve had a number of personal emails asking me how I get backlinks.
By the way, today the number of backlinks is 7790.
In this post I share 11 methods I use but first…what is a backlink:
Simply put, a backlink is a link on a website (including blogs) that leads back to your website / blog.
In search engine optimization (SEO), page rank is at least partially determined by the number of sites that link to yours. It’s important to gain backlinks honestly, and if a lot of other sites link back to you, you will naturally get more traffic to your page.
There is a lot of argument around the quality of backlinks.
We are to believe that a backlink from a website that is in the same niche as yours carries more weight. That would make sense.
Also, we are to believe the higher the Page Rank of the website you are getting backlinks also carries more weight.
So, ideally we want backlinks from websites in our niche and with a Page Rank of 10!
There are not many of those around unfortunately.
My approach is to mix it up and not get too hung up about whether the backlinks are in my niche or coming from very high Page Rank websites. Personally, I have too many other aspects of my on-line business that I want to keep running.

One more thing to mention…

When back-linking try and use the anchor text of your targeted keyword phrase. Read my post on anchor text here: How to use anchor text to your advantage

1. Blog Commenting

An easy way to get backlinks is to target Blogs that ‘Do-Follow’.  If you want to follow do-follow blogs (i.e. the ones that provide you with a backlink), here’s a great list: http://followlist.com/
When you comment try and include your name AND your anchor text. Something like: Terry @ Tips for horse lovers
In this example the anchor text is “Tips for horse lovers”.
Aim to make 10 valuable comments per day.

2. Article Directories

Submitting your articles is a straightforward process.
You simply copy your blog post, add a bio with a link or two back to your site in the resource box. Then you submit these articles to article directories.
Some popular Article Directories for you to try out are:

http://www.goarticles.com
http://www.buzzle.com
http://articlealley.com
http://www.searchwarp.com
http://www.ehow.com
You can just copy and paste your blog articles – you will still get a backlink but if you want to improve your overall SEO and traffic you may wish to use a tool I recently came across and now use: The Best Spinner

And ArticleBot automatically submits your articles (spun or not) to over 400 different Article Directories.

3. RSS Directories

I mention this technique over and over again but there are so many people who just don’t use it and it is one of the easiest ways to get automatic backlinks.

4. Web Directories

Only a couple of years ago, submitting your blog to the web directories was a must. Nowadays, Google, it is believed, doesn’t put so much importance on the free Web Directory listings.
However, I still do submit the sites to the Free Web Directories. As far as I am concerned, the effort it takes is quite minimal, it only has to be completed once and you still get more backlinks and some of them are high Page Ranking.
So I recommend you submit your domain to various Web Directories.
Please note: there can be a waiting period involved, sometimes as much as a few months.
Again, I use tools and services rather than manually carry out myself.
I can recommend DirectoryBot and Directory Maximizer.

5. Social Bookmarking

Most of the very popular social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit do not give you a backlink when you social bookmark your blog post.
However there are some that do! Sites like:

http://www.diigo.com/
I use the tool Bookmarking Demon to submit my blog posts to several of the social bookmarking sites automatically.

6. Web 2.0 Sites

Write a unique blog post and create a hub page using Squidoo or HubPages. These sites provide excellent backlinks.

7. Video Sites

These days having some video blog posts is a must and once created you can submit them to numerous video sites automatically by using TubeMogul.

8. Angela’s Backlinks

Angela’s Backlinks provides you with a monthly report of 30 High Page Rank sites, using screenshots so that you can copy and have backlinks in place linking back to your site within minutes.
And the price for such a report?
$5 a month!

9. Forums

By joining a forum and adding a signature – each time you add a forum post, you can get a backlink (depending upon the forum).
Forums are regularly indexed by search engines, and by joining and adding a signature in your profile, it is another way to get some good backlinks with your desired anchor text. If the forum is a popular one, a backlink can be extremely valuable.
In a lot of cases however, administrators don’t allow links in forums posts.  Some administrators even prohibit the search engines from indexing their content.

10. Guest Posting

Guest posting is not just about getting the backlink. It is much more than that. Read my post on Guest Blogging.

11. Internal Links

Internal links from one blog post to another blog post on your site also count as backlinks.
Each time you write a blog post, try and backlink to a previous post. That way you are also adding another backlink. Plus you are enticing your visitors to see some of your other previous posts.

What is an automatic way of linking to other blog posts?
Use the MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate Plugin.
Not only does it link to affiliate products, you can set up certain keywords to link to your previous posts…and when you first install it…it adds links to all your previous blog posts as well. Instantly you could get a few hundred backlinks. The number depends upon how many published blog posts you have and how many ‘backlinks’ you ask the plugin to add per blog post. I have a maximum of only 2, otherwise it can become spammy looking.
I know I have mentioned numerous ways to build backlinks but by carrying out these tasks you will also gain loads more traffic.

The Tools

One more thing to mention before I finish…within this post I list many of the tools I use each day to help me build backlinks and traffic. If you were to do several of the tasks mentioned by hand (i.e. manually), you would be spending all day just doing the tasks and have no time for anything else…like writing great content and building relationships.
So for me, the tools below are worth investing in and most are one-off payments:

[BCN] - Yes, ofcourse. We suggest that you first use your satellite sites instead of your main money sites. By doing this ensure that you are creating the credibility and also playing safe. Creating backlinks for your backlinks is one of the best strategies to benefit for the long run.

Q. Do you have tips to increase the comment approval rates?

[BCN] - (1) When you use the scrape and post feature tab. Use the time filter to select the recent blogs. Normally the recent blogs are actively manned by the blog admins. Very old blogs though might have some PR for the homepage but could be dormant with blog owners laziness.

(2) When you post for a certain keyword for the first time....try to use a real human name instead of the keyword anchor. many blog owners (including me  ) certainly do not like the idea to approve a post even with a killer comment.

However, once you get the first comment approved....you can use the same success blogs to post more comments and this time use your anchor.

(3) In SEO you just need to go that extra mile as it really pays. Personally, I witnessed great success with this technique.

(a) Use the inbuilt Backlink checker tool to fish out those blogs which approved your comments.

Even if there are a handf ull of those blogs. Say you select 10....out of them doesn't matter.

Next you contact each of the blog owners saying that you are a subscriber to his/her blog and love it for so and so reason  . You offer him/her a contextual link exchange proposal. Out of 10 say even 5 agrees. You get natural incontext and relevant links. Bit of this hard work always pays in SEO.

(b) The other proposal you can give them is show them your post and ask if you can guest blog to them. This also works wonderfully well and this is far more effective than any other link building technique.

(4) Register with www.gravatar.com and create a profile picture and use the same for the email.

[BCN] - Yeah, we agree but can't help much as this is coded from the ubot 4.0 and as you have observed that there are no files which actually installed on your computer hard drive, rather it is more server based.

It should have a much much larger scraping list (or be able to batch this would make it slow), so for example, instead of only scraping for and commenting on a  max of 300, it should be into the thousands at least- so that someone could just set it up and let it run for days or hours - but it finishes with 300 way to quickly and then you have to start again.

[BCN] – This is a common request we are getting from many of our users. It is very easy for us to increase the limits. The reason why we did this is with the logic that we get targeted blogs for your niche keywords. 300 means 10 pages of Google search. If you use each of the footmarks for 300 each it provides a huge list of targeted blogs. This apart you also get the suggested keyword ideas for subsequent runs. Oh ok.

Q. The profile should be ready to go instead of having to non intuitively select the play button.

[BCN] - Once you create the profile and save. You just need to browse and call up that file from the profile folder. You need not use the play button every time. The profile fields will look blank but that is OK…you may move to subsequent tabs to use it. You only need to playback the profile if you want to edit an existing profile.

Q. The program should have the ability to scrape for only do-follow blogs (or filter them out afterwards), and the same with checking for PR. These are desired features – but before commenting is begun. BCN should be able to check a whole list for PR and for dofollow/nofollow so that the user can choose which blog they want to comment on.

[BCN] - This again another common request we get from several users. The background idea is to make strictly in adherence to the Google best practices. If you read the post, you'll not find anywhere Google officially talking about linking the "do-follow" blogs. It just says participate in your niche positively. However, if we do get more requests for this feature we shall think to bring this in.

Q. Since you want to keep it human mimicking by not having multi-threading, then if someone has 10 URLs to promote for example, it should be able to comment on all of them at the same time (even if this makes it really slow- the users can just set it and forget it).

[BCN] - This indicates you are looking for different profiles (urls and other credentials) to be run at one go. Unless you are using multiple windows this can’t be done. This means that you need to open up 10 session of the BCN and run 10 different profiles. However, for the same niche but multiple url. You may rotate like example: www.carolinaagents.com and www.carolinarealestate.org you can use the spintax feature like {www.carolinaagents.com | www.carolinarealestate.org}

Q. I have over a 28k “do-follow” blog list running for it to comment on but it is running very slow.

[BCN] – We certainly do not recommend using these easily available blog lists. The reason being most of these blogs are already “spammed to death” and will have high OBL (out bound link ratio) which is not useful. The slow running issue is with those heavily spammed blogs. If you manually try to open the blog page it will take ages to open as already there must have been around thousands of comments. We always suggest using blogs in around your niche….even if you get fewer comments approved, this will still benefit you in the long run.

Q. In the profile, instead of having to enter your keywords as spintax, it should be able to pull from a list in a file and automatically do this for you.

[BCN] - Have you used the spintax tab? You just need to enter the raw data and point to the right box it will post to the bot will automatically do the same and then when you save the profile it stays there.

Q. I think the comment and scrap feature should be more like just the comment feature. For example, you should not have to scrape for comment boxes that say: “leave reply”, “leave a reply”, “post a comment”, etc separately. It should at least give the user a choice to be able to find all types at the same time.

[BCN] - There is already a selection for the "Google Blogsearch" option at the selection drop down where you have the blog type selection. The Google Blog search will find all types of blog at once.

Q. Why do comments need to be spun by the Best Spinner if they are already unique to the post?

[BCN] - No, the comments are not unique per se but same way like WP Robot does. It scrapes relevant content. To make it unique we provided the option for spinning.

Q. I went to the Blog Auto Feeder, started it on my blog, but it couldn’t find the comment box, maybe it’s not finding other comment boxes also- this should be fixed if possible.

[BCN] - You need to select the page link where you have the form and the page you want to post. It will work. Actually I did this, I'll try again later.

Q. While the program is running, and you’re trying to type in a browser for example, the highlight is continually lost because of the software, you are typing and then the focus is lost- BCN has to be paused until I’m finished typing elsewhere and then restarted- this could be fixed.
